Pin Grading Scale

✨ Pin Grading Scale ✨

Pin grading is one of those things that's different for every artist. Because enamel pins are handmade, no pin is ever perfect, and small variations are inevitable.

When I grade my pins, I focus on the facing surface (the design side of the pin). The sides and backs of the pins are scrutinized to a much lower degree, mostly to ensure that the pin isn't damaged to a point where it could not be displayed. Below you can find details about what separates each grade of pin in my shop in terms of design and appearance.

A/Standard Grade

These are pins that have little to no blemishes or flaws. If those do exist, they are only noticeable if inspected up close and under bright light. These could include:

  • small, but not noticeable, air bubbles
  • small, but not noticeable, scratches or marks
  • surface-level scuffing on the metal plating or screen printing
  • minor offset in screen printing

These pins are sold at full price and make great gifts or collection additions. They're also excellent for wear or display.

B/Seconds Grade

These are pins that have noticeable flaws that can be seen if looked at in normal light and from an arm's length away. Some have more minor or major blemishes than others. These could include:

  • noticeable or multiple air bubbles
  • noticeable or multiple scratches or marks
  • missing enamel
  • obviously offset screen printing
  • small gouges or marks in the enamel

These pins are great to wear, especially if you don't want to worry about keeping a pin "perfect" and can make a great addition to a collection if the imperfections above aren't bothersome. I sell these pins at a slight discount.
